Gorgeous little Brunswick tuck-away
Claire Wiltshire 27 November 2008
Tucked around the corner from SydneyRoad's wedding strip and the popular café areathat includes Ray and Empire, Tré is nuzzled in a gorgeous European-style plazaat the end of an alleyway of boutiques.
There is plentyof outdoor seating, so you're more than welcome to park a pram or a pooch. Ifyou prefer something a little cosier, you cansidle up to a friend on a comfy bench inside, or catch up on the papers at alarger communal table.
The coffee hereis fair trade and served in any number of ways. On warmer summer days, you can order it iced, or even can thecaffeine and settle for a milkshake. The flat whites are pretty standard, butorder a short black (Tré's name suggests it is a specialty), and you'll really taste the quality.
The breakfastmenu is modest, but diverse enough to suit arange of tastes. For something light, there are muffins, croissants andsourdough toast options available. The menu promises wheat and gluten freebreads for 50c extra. It also boasts a wonderful wheat-freemuesli made by Triple R's nutrition expert Flip Shelton.
Standard eggsare served poached and offered with spinach and tomato, or with salmon, rocketand dill aioli. The serves are generous and great value is a bonus. Baked eggsare served rustic, oven-to-table style, on awooden tray with a hearty chunk of bread on the side that helps to bulk up theotherwise fairly minimal dish. The eggs are baked with prosciutto and cherry tomatoes. If you are vegetarian, an alternative version, withspinach and baked beans, is also available. A creamywhite Asiago cheese is melted on top to add areal edge to these dishes.
Cheese is usedto add a bit of zing to the rich tomato-bakedcanelli beans as well. The sharp pecorino really adds something. The beans areavailable with sourdough as the main course, but it'salso worth ordering as a side dish to complement the eggs on toast.
Tré is a gorgeous café with a very young feel. The alternative sounds and abundance of flyers and homemadeads add a great local buzz. Breakfast is available until late, and if you stickaround afterwards on a Friday, you can enjoy the recent addition of livemusical entertainment. Keep a close eye on the breakfast menu too-this café is going places.
