When in Rome...........

Ellie Parker 22 August 2008

The Globe is a grungy Chapel Street institution that packs a crowd. Both old timers and current regulars rave about it. Some will tell you it's all about the homemade cheese bread. Others will tell you it's the eggs, "Oh god, the eggs", they say. To be honest, I don't think you could go wrong with what ever you order at The Globe. The breakfast here is delicious, fresh and bountiful. The menu reads like a dream come true - it is interesting without being too challenging, all the while tempting your taste buds (olive bread, rocket pesto, chilli corn jacks, guacamole are but just some of the highlights).  In fact the menu is almost impossible to choose from. The packaged deals, such as The Globe Breakfast, compete with the amazing array of "free rangers" such as homemade breads with your choice of eggs and extras.

As the name suggests, The Globe covers breakfasts from all corners of the world.  The Italian, The French, The Spanish, are represented alongside The Vego and The Salmon. I ordered both The Vego and The Loation (sic) just out of pure excitement. The Vego comes as two fried eggs on coriander and chilli corn jacks, grilled tomato and avocado guacamole.  The chilli is present in each mouthful and is tempered by the creamy guacamole and eggs. It is a screaming success of flavour and colour.

The Loation (sic) comes as an exotic delivery of bean shoots, rice, sweet chilli and a lovely, crispy spring onion omelette.  The omelette is slightly sweet and slightly savoury, and perfect for those who have done their dash with  eggs benedict. The bean shoots, I might add, are spanking fresh and plentiful. The rice is also perfectly cooked. The French is also a nice variation on a theme, with poached eggs, smoked ham, asparagus served on cheese toast with hollandaise. There is not one bit of this dish that is left on the plate. It is scrumptious. Full of eggy, cheesy, hollandaisey goodness.

But sometimes the simplest things in life are the best. In an effort to do justice to Globe's array of "choose your own adventure" options I ordered two poached eggs on home-baked cheese bread. Now, by this stage I had had two breakfasts already. My dance card was full.  But The Globe's cheese bread is worth its reputation. Together with two perfectly poached eggs, the dish is replete with flavour. I now understand the regulars who rave about it.

As a postscript, I should add that there is muesli served with granny smith apple and honeyed yoghurt as well as porridge with maple syrup. I imagine most people overlook these healthier options. In fact, everybody had eggs sitting in front of them when I last visited.

I suppose, when in Rome, do as the Romans do and order the cheese bread.
