I'm not sure whether the friend who first told me about The Breakfast Club made a mistake when describing the décor to me or whether I dreamt it, but for some reason I was seriously expecting the interior walls to be adorned with images of Judd, Molly, Ally et al in the landmark teen movie from which the eatery takes its name.
I was a bit crestfallen when I discovered that in reality there are only token references to the film – a few dishes named after the actors, and a mock coat of arms decreeing that the café was 'established in 1985' (the year The Breakfast Club was made). Then there is the huge wooden peace sign on one wall which, obviously, speaks more of the 60s than the 80s.
It took me a few minutes of sitting politely at one of the indoor tables to notice that I was supposed to go up and order at the counter. I chose a fortifying latte (excellent) and the fresh, light Bananarama –banana, cream cheese, cinnamon and honey on sourdough toast (Nutella is optional – I declined). My companion went for the subtly flavoursome Ringwald, a brie and quince paste melt with basil on sourdough toast.
Other drool worthy options include the Sheedy toasts (sour dough toasts with a choice of spreads), Stax toast (toast with Danish fetta, tomato, basil pesto and avocado), Something Fishy for Marce (sardines with tomato, lemon and fresh herbs on toast with a rocket and pecorino salad),the Emilio Molette (spicy beans with soft cheese and herbs and a hollowed out baguette) and Tone's Creamy Baked Eggs (two eggs, bacon, caramelised onion, tomato, baby spinach, mustard, fresh herbs, rocket and pecorino salad, HP Sauce and toast).
The cereals on offer include the Sisi Sianna (granola with stewed fruits, milk and honey) and Muzia's Muse (bircher muesli with cranberries, apple, toasted nuts, seeds and honey). Toasties and Phoenix juices are also available. All breakfasts are priced between $4 and $14.
The café has a homey, intimate feel and, on weekdays at least, provides the perfect setting for quietly catching up with friends or onwork. If only they'd go all out with the décor and start serving breakfast sushi and potato chip sandwiches … (um, if you've seen the film you'll know what I'm talking about).
