Putting the cool in cardigan

As you look around the high ceilings and modern fittings of Lord Cardigan, the restaurant may strike you as a little stark. You may wonder if indeed elegant is the word you're searching for, or if it's just the quiet saccharine soundtrack lingering far in the background that's got you all confused. One look at the simple sophistication of the brekkie plates however, and you soon realise you're in for a fancy feed. Dishes like the omelette with leg ham and fontina cheese are tight, sharp and never over done. Parmesan and onions are added to the scrambled eggs for a tangy, savoury edge; the grilled corn muffins topped with smoked salmon and avocado also meet the mark.
Brioche is the bread de jour in Melbourne cafes and, although sweet, it works wonderfully well with juicy Portobello mushrooms, goats curd at Lord Cardigan. The soft and fluffy base of this dish effectively tones down the striking flavours on top, and the dish is just light enough to avoid any heaviness. The addition of the sometimes-ubiquitous rocket nicely rounds off this standout dish.
Lord Cardigan is, as yet, not one of those infamously popular cafes with waiting queues around the wrapped around the corner. Perhaps no one can find it tucked away on the narrow corner of one-way Cardigan Place in Albert Park. Or perhaps trendy breakfasters just don't know how good it is. Sshh, don't spoil the calm- it's one of this cafe's best features. That and the fantastic food!
