Don't be fooled by Knead's rather sparse, utilitarian shop/café floor-their delicious wares more than make up for the somewhat austere décor. Essentially a bakery selling a range of breads and pastries (they're particularly known for their baguettes), Knead also serves breakfasts that, of course, incorporate their baked goods.

Those wanting to test out the breads, which include gluten free, sour dough and sprouted wheat varieties, in their purest form might like to go straight to the toast with homemade jams deal ($4). Pastries available on the day we went included mandorlato (a lemon scented milk bun with nuts), German sausage rolls, and savoury brioches.

It took me a while to choose from the main menu. In my staunchly non-hungover state, a walnut with provolone cheese toasted sandwich ($6), or a croque monsieur with Dijon mustard, ham and béchamel cheese ($6.50) didn't really appeal. I did, however, make a mental note to come back and check those dishes out after a heavy night on the tiles.

The breakfast I finally chose, French toast with blueberries and maple syrup ($9), was delicious and, thankfully, not overly sweet. My companion chose a poached egg with a side of beautifully sautéed mushrooms ($7). Other menu items included toasted or natural muesli with fruit compote and house-made yoghurt ($7); porridge of cinnamon, apple, sultanas and brown sugar ($7.50); and mushrooms sautéed with thyme and finished with sherry vinegar on toast ($8.50).

Genovese coffee and Sri Lankan tea are served, and Knead's own chai latte is excellent. The organic juices are by Phoenix, New Zealand.
