No need to put Gretel in the oven
Francesca Fogarty
Yarraville. Yep, Yarraville, that's where we're going out for breakfast this morning I said to my foodie friend. "Yarraville? Really? Can't we go somewhere cool?", he muttered. Yarraville is cool, I calmly explained. It's the new black. A dubious look was sent my way. But friendship being what it is, I managed to convince my friend to venture West with me. He wasn't disappointed.
However, getting from A to B wasn't as easy as I originally thought (and I claim that I'm a Westie). We got lost. Seriously lost. We drove through industrial areas, farm land (well kind of), motor ways and parks. Where on earth is Yarraville? Turns out, not that far. You just need a sense of direction. And gosh is it cute. Haus Frau's even cuter. It's kind of like a modern gingerbread house. Pinks, pastels and the delicious smells of home made baking. No need to put Gretel in the oven, there is enough goodness here to feed the whole forest.
I think it's fair to say that all's fair in love and breakfast. Campari and orange sorbet for dessert? Sure. Béchamel sauce? Why not? Who's to say what forms the basis of breakfast and what falls out of that sphere.
Anyway, rules aside, my foodie friend and I ordered large. All that u-turning and muttering obscenities had created some form of gigantic appetite and those gorgeous bakery cabinets were bursting with what can only be described as wondrous wondrousness.
We ate a French style croquet with ham (off the bone) topped with a light, fluffy béchamel sauce languorously oozing underneath the golden crisp skin that had formed on the top. It combined crunch (the bread), with decadence (the ham), and wholesome goodness (the béchamel). No gruyere cheese, but it was lovely.
Continuing the croquet theme, we also had a crisp shell of gooey goodness which formed the cauli cheese croquet. It was creamy and heartwarming.
Roasted tomato and goats cheese was served on top of Noisette olive bread (one of the few items not baked on site). Fresh and tart, it was delicious.
Following my foodie friend's lead I ordered my coffee hot and strong, the kick was enough to ensure that I didn't need a second (unusual for me).
To be fair, it's not a complete breakfast menu per se - there is toast, Bircher muesli with seasonal fruit, granola, a bacon and parsley tart and a egg and bacon pide. The cabinet however is oozing with sooo many freshly made treats that you feel justified in being adventurous. And it would be rude not to order the mushroom and artichoke strudel, surely.
