Harvest Cafe

Kate Jones

Walking in the door of the Harvest Café is like stepping into a cosy country kitchen. The doughy smell of toast and fresh coffee, weekend newspapers spread out on a long dining table, and the muted sounds of slow folk music in the background. It's all so comfortable and exactly the right setting for a long, relaxed brekkie.

The menu, with only five items on the list, is not extensive. But in this reviewer's humble opinion, a short menu equals higher quality food.

The brekkie at Harvest doubled as a weekend catch-up with my mum and sister. Mum went with the thick-cut French toast with poached fruit; my sister ordered the poached eggs on soft Italian-style toast with a serve of free-range bacon; and I kept it simple with toast and conserves. The French toast was a sweet delight, topped in maple syrup, sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar, and set off with a side of poached rhubarb and apple. Mmm.

As for the eggs, my sister could only utter the word, ‘Beautiful,' between mouthfuls. She gave the bacon two thumbs up-soft, juicy and full of flavour. Eggs on toast is a bargain at $12, but you can take your pick from the $4 extras (spinach gratin, homemade baked beans, and Kitchen and Butcher maple sausage). All this - including eggs on toast and bacon - adds up to The Lot, which sets you back $20.50.

The bread and conserves may have seemed a boring choice, but these jams almost had me licking the plate. Harvest uses local produce, including Cunliffe and Waters jams and preserves from nearby Coldstream. I tucked into the Seville orange marmalade and raspberry jam. The raspberry jam was so deliciously sweet and chock-full of raspberries, that I couldn't resist buying a jar to take home.

Harvest serves Genovese coffee and organic SIP teas. Also on the menu is porridge with golden raisins, toasted almonds and local honey, and granola served with creamy yoghurt and fruit compote, both at $10.50.

In addition to local produce, the café sells wines and cute handmade items such as aprons and shopping bags.

Harvest is buzzing on weekends. Diners sit inside for the comfy kitchen vibe, or in the laneway linking the café to the Healesville Hotel. Harvest is not huge, so it's best to arrive before 11 am to grab a seat and settle in for a sumptuous feed.
