Stop and smell the Latte
Francesca Fogarty
Walking down the cold streets of early morning Melbourne it appears that no one stops mid week to smell the latte. Rather, grim faced suits order their “soy cap to go” whilst flicking their tired eyes over the day’s headlines. Then you stumble upon Brother Baba Budan.
Warm, cosy and inviting, there is a renaissance happening in downtown Melbourne. Brother Budan has managed to coax appetites for life out of the suit brigade’s shell.
A small room which only has room for 12 gives the impression that you’re sitting at your breakfast table at home, luxuriously taking the time to enjoy the morning and actually read the paper. People smile as you walk in, ladies gossip, men plot, and familiar faces nod at one another.
A beautiful arrangement of flowers sits in the middle of the communal table and chairs hang from the ceiling. The coffee is rich and sweet, a gentle caress to start the day. No need for a double shot espresso, take the time to enjoy your flat white.
Breakfast options are limited; cupcakes, muffins and delectable pastries are it. But it feels like a treat on a cold Monday morning. Raspberry brioche? Don’t mind if I do. Cool sweetness envelopes the senses. The ham and cheese croissant doesn’t overwhelm, it soothes.
Who needs therapy? Take twenty minutes at Brother Baba Budan and the day doesn’t seem so hard.
