Bomb Café and Bar is a grungy little spot down the less fashionable end of Johnston Street, just over Hoddle. If slick fit-outs are your thing, then it mightn't be for you, but if you appreciate friendly service, simple and tasty food, and good coffee, then you should enjoy this place.
The café consists of a small, sunny front room, a generally quieter back room, and an outdoor area, with seats, for smokers. If you don't mind the constant roar of traffic on the corner of Johnston and Hoddle, there's also a table out front in the sun.
Coffee is a definite highlight at Bomb. Customers can choose between Genovese and Gravity Organic-Bomb staff recommend Gravity for lattes, flat whites and cappuccinos, and the more robust Genovese for black coffees. Not to be missed is the freshly squeezed blood orange juice, when it's in season.
The menu includes a good range of breakfast options, from toast and spreads to ricotta pancakes with blood orange syrup and double cream. Eggs are a mainstay, with several choices of traditional and open omelettes, eggs Benedict and Florentine, and a build-your-own big breakfast. For lunch, Bomb offers a great selection of fresh baguettes as well as three different risotto options.
Organic produce is used in abundance and many dishes feature house-made jam, chutney and mayonnaise. Vegetarians and vegans are well catered for-scrambled tofu is available, as is LSD (Latte Soy Dandelion). One word of warning: the kitchen is little more than a pair of hot plates behind the till, so expect a wait for food if the café is really busy.
